Everton midfielder Andre Gomes has revealed that setting small goals were crucial to his mental wellbeing whilst returning from his horror injury.
The Portuguese midfielder fractured and dislocated his ankle after a challenge from Heung-Min Son against Tottenham Hotspur on November 3.
However, Gomes made a fantastic recovery and returned against Arsenal in late February.
The 26-year-old made what many feel was an astonishingly quick return, with just over 100 days between sustaining the ankle injury to returning to first-team action at the Emirates.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Gomes has revealed how setting bite-sized goals and targets was key to returning so quickly, as it took away the mental burden of how he was going to get back to full fitness.
"I had some stress for the first two or three days, I was fine to the outside, my family and friends, but obviously with doubts and questions," Gomes told Sky Sports.
"I took time for myself to think about what happened. How much I wanted to get fit, I just took that time to ask everything. How was I going to build my confidence in the rehab?
"People answered my questions and we built everything back with small steps, every week. Everything was easier mentally because the people around me helped me to move in small goals.
"Having the kind of people all the questions, that gives you the confidence to keep going and keep pushing."
