New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern keeps cool as earthquake strikes during TV interview

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was largely unphased when an earthquake struck during a live TV interview Monday morning.

“We’re just having a bit of an earthquake here, Ryan,” Ardern told the host of Newshub when the rumbling began. “Quite a decent shake here.”

After a fleeting look of concern, Ardern smiles and explains “if you see things moving behind me, the [parliament building] moves a little more than most.”

The 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck at about 8 a.m. and was centered roughly 60 miles away from the capital city of Wellington.

There were no reports of major damage or injuries.

Once the shaking stopped, Ardern, giggling, reassured the host that everything was O.K.

“We’re fine Ryan. I’m not under any hanging lights. I look like I’m in a structurally sound place,” the prime minister said.
