Plans to further reduce Huawei’s involvement in UK 5G infrastructure are being drawn up following growing anti-China sentiment in the wake of the coronavirus.

BT is already committed to stripping out Huawei equipment from the core of the network by 2023.

The core is where voice and  data are routed to their destinations across sub-networks and servers, the non-core comprises the antennas and base stations which provide mobile devices with radio access to the core.

It has already been decided not to use Huawei gear in the core.

Now it is reported that  the government’s intention is to reduce Huawei’s involvement in the UK’s network to zero by 2023.

The government’s new tough stance on Huawei is said to follow Tory MPs’ reaction to the way China has behaved on the coronavirus with an initial cover-up, failure to inform about the seriousness of the disease, alleged attempts to break into US research on the virus, moves to gain economic advantage from the pandemic and the new authoritarian rule being imposed on Hong Kong.
