'I think from people I've spoken to in the community really understands the risk'

A leading Mansfield politician said he is "proud" of how seriously people have taken coronavirus and social distancing in his area.

Public Health England data shows, as of Sunday May 24, there are 123 confirmed coronavirus cases across the Mansfield district area - making it by far the lowest area of infection in Nottinghamshire.

The next lowest council area is Newark and Sherwood with 158 confirmed cases of Covid-19.

In Nottingham city, there are 600 confirmed cases.

Martin Wright is the deputy leader of Mansfield District Council and councillor for the Holly ward for the Mansfield Independents.

He told Nottinghamshire Live:"My opinion is although you would not always think so, people really are taking this seriously - particularly with isolating.

"I think from people I've spoken to in the community really understands the risk.

"People want to feel safe and I think will feel reassured by the number.

"We've got such a good hospital in King's Mill as well now with all the improvements they have made."

Mr Wright did admit that he felt more people should be wearing masks and gloves when out, particularly when shopping in supermarkets.

"I think the worry remains when people go shopping, they seem to get a little overconfident.

"When I contact people to speak to them, they really are all trying to adhere to social distancing.

"I am very proud of the fact we are lowest in the county and very proud of people in my patch doing their best to follow the guidance and to adhere to the government regulations."

The data shows how many lab-confirmed cases there are, plus what the infection rate is by each lower-tier local authority.

Below is the break down of cases from each borough and district from Sunday May 24 and the increase of cases from Friday May 22.
