Ballarat's food relief site is on the move to Morshead Park.

Foodbank drop-off point moves to Morshead Park

by

BALLARAT'S emergency food relief station has moved to Morshead Park as restrictions begin to be lifted across the city.

The Foodbank relief station has been located at the Ballarat Library since May 1 but has now moved to a more open area in Redan.

The emergency food relief station is seeking non-perishable items that can be distributed to welfare agencies across the city who are assisting vulnerable people who are struggling due to a range of social distancing measures being put in place.

Items that are being sourced include flour, tinned fruit and vegetables, long life milk, rice, tuna, soups, tea, coffee, pasta, pasta sauce and personal hygiene products.

Mayor Ben Taylor said the popularity of emergency food relief facility had been encouraging.

"We have seen a fantastic level of support and contribution by our local community donating food items and applaud the wonderful work of all our local welfare agencies in supporting vulnerable members of our community," Cr Taylor said.

"Distribution of these food items will remain with welfare organisations across the city who continue to do tremendous work supporting vulnerable community members.

"I have been really encouraged by the generosity of Ballarat residents, who have embraced the Be Kind message and continue to show their kindness to those who are struggling in our community."

The Be Kind Ballarat message has been a high-profile campaign during the coronavirus pandemic.

It encourages residents to be kind to business, family, friends, themselves and importantly other members of the community who may be doing it tough.

"We know some people might be feeling a little alone right now, so if everyone in Ballarat simply knocked on their neighbours door or called over the fence to say hello to their neighbour, it would mean every household maintains some much needed social contact," the council says.

The Morshead Park facility will be a drop-off point only and will be open from 10am to 12pm on Monday through to Friday.
