India's coronavirus death count crosses 4,000

Over the past 24 hours, cases in India jumped by 6,977, the sixth consecutive peak in daily cases. The death toll also rose by 154, a new peak. New cases were reported from 26 states/UTs, compared to 27 a day before.

The official coronavirus count in India went up to 1,38,845 in the past 24 hours, Union Health ministry's daily updated showed.

At 8 am, the number of the dead was 4,021. The number of the cured/discharged was 57,721.

Meanwhile, infections have continued to rise speedily in the country. Going by the latest update, India has now surpassed Iran in total number of cases, going up in the list to become the 10th most coronavirus-affected country in the planet.

Maharashtra continued to lead the state-wise tally with cases going up to a humongous 50,231, with 1,635 deaths.
