Child drowns after struggling in the current near Siesta Key Beach

SARASOTA, Fla--A child drowned after getting caught in the current off Siesta Key Beach. Sarasota Sheriff's Office says it happened around 6:30 p.m. Sunday near 948 Beach Road. Witnesses told deputies that several children were seen struggling in the current about 100 yards offshore. An adult swam to the child to help. The child was brought to the shore unresponsive and was transported to the hospital, but did not survive.

The other children were treated at the scene and released.
