Guwahati, May 24, 2020: Sanatan Deka, aged 38, was a worker in the production unit of the Emami Ltd. situated at Pacharia, 23 km from Guwahati. The unit is temporarily closed due to COVID-19 lockdown. As he had no other means of earnings and due to the hardships brought upon by the lockdown, he started selling vegetables door to door on his bicycle. On that fateful Friday, May 22, he started from his village Tetelia towards Manahkuchi, hoping to find some takers for his vegetables.

At Manahkuchi village, which is mostly populated by Assamese Muslims, Deka's bicycle was hit by a scooty. Two persons who were riding the scooty were violating the lockdown norms stipulated for two-wheelers. The rider was Jalil Ali, and Khabir Ali was the pillion. It was a small bump, and quite non-consequential. They had a skirmish, and it soon turned into a brawl when Jalil and Khabir decided to call a mob for on-the-spot justice. Faizul Haque, Firjahan Ali and Yusuf Ali promptly came to help their brethren in Tawhid. The mob did not stop until poor Sanatan collapsed from a direct hit on his head from Faizul.

The two accused who were involved in the mob lynching of Sanatan Deka have been arrested by Hajo Police. The arrested persons have been identified as Faizul Haque and Yusufuddin Ahmed (pic below).

An aged teacher and her mother were gang-raped while coming back from school in a Muslim majority area. Several young TET woman teachers were either molested, forced to eat beef or harassed in Muslim majority areas . Are they trying to create no-go zones where ultimately even police would not dare to go?

Residents tell us that Jalil and others were angry that a Hindu was selling vegetables in a Muslim majority area. Due to the trust deficit that surfaced because of the actions of COVID-19 super spreaders from the Tablighi Jamat, many are apprehensive about buying from and maintaining social relations with members of the Muslim community. Though it has not transformed into social boycott per se, the economic impact on the Muslim vendors is evident. Many Assamese Hindus have taken this opportunity to fill this gap and started doing jobs that have hitherto been mostly taken over by Muslims of Bangladeshi origin.

Hajo is a place of much historical and cultural significance just 35 Km from Guwahati. A place many Assamese proudly present as the piece de resistance of xatam puruxia xampriti, the Assamese equivalent of the Ganga-Jamuni tehjib, famous for the ancient Vishnu shrine, the Hayagriva Madhava Temple and the Poa Mocca Dargah Sarif which are only 5 kms apart. Although the geographical distance between these two shrines has not changed a bit over the centuries, the hearts of the people that worship in these shrines have been drifting apart ever since the new wave of global Islamism came in the wake of Wahhabism.
Only a few days ago, an Assamese Hindu named Raktim Kashyap was attacked by a butcher named Ibnis Ali for selling mutton in Ujanbazar area of Guwahati. However, he had permission to sell in that area.

A pattern is emerging; however, hard one may try to look the other way and cannot be ignored anymore. An aged teacher and her mother were gang-raped while coming back from school in a Muslim majority area. Several young TET woman teachers were either molested, forced to eat beef or harassed in Muslim majority areas and now a vegetable vendor is mob-lynched. Are they trying to create no-go zones where ultimately even police would not dare go where Shari'ah would supersede the Indian constitution? Though not suitable for the nation, the signs are not good either.
