Boneless chicken rate hits all-time high in Hyderabad

Even skinless chicken prices also shoot up as following shortage in poultry production

Hyderabad: Amid lockdown, boneless chicken prices have shot up to all-time high at Rs 500 a kg at several chicken centres in the city.

Following the shortage in poultry production, the price of boneless chicken has doubled from the usual pricing of Rs 250 to Rs 300. Two weeks back, the price of boneless chicken was Rs 400 a kg and by Sunday, prices climbed to Rs 500 a kg.

Not just boneless, even the skinless chicken prices also have gone up considerably. Given the hot summer conditions that have set in and low poultry productions, the prices of skinless chicken which had dropped drastically early this year due to rumours linking coronavirus with chicken consumption, have started to up in the local markets.

In this month, the chicken price per kg went up by as much as around Rs 80 to Rs 100 per kg. The skinless chicken which was sold for around Rs 150 to Rs 170 a kg is now available at Rs 250 to Rs 280 a kg in the city.

Traders pointed out that the supply of chicken in the city was affected since the lockdown and resulted in the prices going up sharply. The rising temperatures across the State meanwhile were among the reasons that had hit live birds in farms badly, they said.

According to Ram Reddy, Chairman and Managing Director at Sneha Farms, the chicken sales are down to 60 percent as hotels and restaurants have remained closed. “At present, there is only domestic consumption and once business comes to normal, prices will become reasonable,” he said. “We usually supply around 10 lakh birds in the State every day, however, now we are supplying only 4 lakh birds. We expect the supply and sales to pick up next month,” he added.

Meanwhile, mutton prices in the city that escalated to touch almost Rs 1,000 per kg have come down in the last few days. Presently, mutton is being sold at around Rs 700 a kg after GHMC started to carry out raids on shops that were selling mutton at exorbitant prices.
