Hyderabad: One man drowned while attempting to rescue his friend from drowning in the Devarayamjal village lake in Petbasheerabad here on Sunday night. He is suspected to have been in an inebriated condition, the police said.

The victim was identified as E Vasu (34), an auto-rickshaw driver from Ayodya Nagar in Shapur in Quthbullapur.

According to the police, on Sunday afternoon, Vasu, along with his friends Vikram Reddy, Shiva and Kiran, went to an open place near the lake and had a liquor party. After drinking, in an inebriated condition, they went to the waterbody to swim around 7 pm.

“While others got into the water to swim, Kiran stood on the shore and was watching as he did not know how to swim. He however slipped and fell into the water. Vasu who noticed this, pushed Kiran to the shore and during the process, he drowned,” police said.

On receiving information on Monday morning, the Petbasheerabad police reached the spot and retrieved the body. Based on a complaint from Vasanth, Vasu’s brother, a case was booked. The body was shifted to the Gandhi Hospital morgue and was handed over to the family after autopsy later in the day.
