Hyderabad: Muslims across the city are celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr on Monday amidst the lockdown. The festivities are mostly confined to houses with the community elders asking people to offer regular prayers at their homes as the Eid prayers cannot be held without the obligatory sermon and congregation.

Dressed in traditional festive attire, community members offered the ‘shukhrana’ (thanksgiving) namaz at their homes in the morning and later extended the Eid-ul-Fitr greetings to family members.

“People are using WhatsApp to make video calls and wish their relatives and friends. Many families dropped plans of visiting their relatives to greet them on the occasion in view of Covid-19,” said Mirza Shafiullah Baig, an architect from Moghalpura.

The regular hustle and bustle and excitement witnessed on the streets in the older parts of the city was missing. Scenes of the pious rushing to the Eidgah to offer the Eid prayers were not visible as the Eid-ul-Fitr prayers in mosques were suspended. Similarly, the announcement from the mosque informing about the Eid-ul-Fitr timings at the local Masjid made as a practice were not done as almost all the mosques were closed.

On Sunday night, the usual scene of thousands converging at the Ramzan Bazaar at Charminar was not seen as the police shut the shops by 7 pm in view of the night curfew. The streets of Charminar, Laad Bazaar and Pathergatti wore a deserted look at 8 pm as against the practice of shops remaining open till the next morning and shopping throughout the night.
