Rumor | Apple's butterfly keyboards might make a controversial return in the future
by Daniel R DeakinIt has been rumored that Apple is busy working on improving the highly controversial butterfly keyboard that the OEM utilized in laptops such as the MacBook Pro, MacBook, and MacBook Air over the last few years. Although more recent models have been fitted with scissor switch keyboards, it could be that the butterfly keyboard will reappear in the future.
There might be a shudder going down the spines of many MacBook fans if this latest rumor about the divisive butterfly keyboard has any substance to it. According to a tipster known as @L0vetodream, Apple hasn’t completely given up with the much-maligned input device mechanism and is actually working on fixing the issues inherent to the keyboard’s design.
Of course, this is just a rumor shared on Twitter, so it should be taken with a pinch of salt. However, it’s a feasible rumor as it could be easily understood that Apple would want to mend the problems with the butterfly keyboard and then reintroduce it rather than completely admit failure with it. Although the implementation of the butterfly mechanism allowed for slimmer MacBook devices, particles trapped under the keys' "wings" often led to keyboard failure.
Surprisingly enough, regardless of the amount of negative attention the butterfly keyboards in Apple MacBook devices received, it seems there are still plenty of fans of this particular mechanism who prefer it over the more conventional scissor switch design. If Apple could improve the current butterfly keyboard design or even perfect it, then perhaps future devices from the popular OEM will once more be fitted with this particular input choice.
