Xiaomi keeps the Mi A1 alive with a new Android Pie update
by Codrut NistorRather unsurprisingly, there is a new Android Pie-based firmware update rolling out for the Xiaomi Mi A1 right now — at least in Eastern Europe. With a size of less than 80 MB, the new patch does not contain any noticeable changes apart from the usual security improvements and bug fixes.
Although an official Android 10 update is definitely out of the picture now, Xiaomi continues to support the Mi A1 with monthly security patches. I don't know about other regions, but I — currently located in Romania — got it earlier today, so I am sure that all Mi A1 users all over the world should get the new firmware by the end of the week.
If you were wondering about what's new, there's nothing special to say, unfortunately. The update size is just a bit over 76 MB and, after restarting the phone to complete the update, I got the usual message saying "Success! Your phone just got fresher and more secure" without any other details.
However, those looking for more details should find them in the second screenshot below — the security patch is dated May 1, 2020, and the kernel has been apparently compiled on May 11.
The good part is that a stable Android 10-based version of Pixel Experience is already available and the third-party — obviously unofficial — firmware releases ready to refresh the Xiaomi Mi A1 don't stop here. For those adventurous enough to experiment with their rather outdated Xiaomi handsets, there is also DerpFest, Corvus OS, and the — nightly and apparently out of development — LineageOS 17.1. If you're running any of them, feel free to let us know what you think about them in the comments section.
