4 Ways Ariana Grande Made Hot 100 History With Her Latest No. 1 Hit
by Hugh McIntyreAlmost a week ago, Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber debuted their first single together, the sweet and very necessary “Stuck With U,” at No. 1 on the Hot 100. In doing so, the track joins a club that includes fewer than 40 titles (out of over 1,000 No. 1 hits in history), and the new smash helps Grande make Hot 100 history in a number of ways.
Second Woman To Chart Three No. 1 Debuts
Only one other female musician has managed to debut three songs at No. 1 in the Hot 100’s 60-year-long tenure, and Grande is now in truly incredible company. Before the “Stuck With U” singer landed her third immediate champion, only Mariah Carey had been able to start a trio of tracks in first place. Carey earned her first No. 1 launch in 1995 with “Honey,” which made history as the second-ever chart-topping debut. Later that same year, she added her Boyz II Men duet “One Sweet Day” to her growing list, and two years after that win, she collected her third and so far final leading start with “Fantasy.”
Fourth Musician To Chart Three No. 1 Debuts
In addition to Grande and Carey, only two other musicians have debuted three songs at No. 1 on the Hot 100, and they are both solo males. Drake became just the second artist to do so earlier this year when his smash “Toosie Slide” joined with his 2018 chart-toppers “God’s Plan” and “Nice For What” in the chart-topping launch club.
Bieber also earns his third No. 1 debut with “Stuck With U,” which follows his previous instant winners “What Do You Mean?” and DJ Khaled’s “I’m the One,” which features the Canadian pop star alongside Lil Wayne, Chance the Rapper and Quavo.
First Musician To Collect Her First Three No. 1 Hits With Debuts
Unlike the other three artists mentioned above who have managed to snag three No. 1 starts on the Hot 100, Grande is the only artist who had never reached the summit before debuting a tune there. She makes history this week with this latest smash, as she is now the first artist to collect her first three chart-toppers with debuts.
First Musician To Debut Songs At No. 1 Three Years In A Row
While Carey, Drake and Bieber managed No. 1 debuts close to one another, none have been able to space them out quite as perfectly as Grande has. The singer has now started a single atop the Hot 100 in each of the past three years, which is something no other act has accomplished before. She collected her first in late 2018 with “Thank U, Next,” and then several months later in early 2019, “7 Rings” also launched at No. 1. Now, not halfway into 2020, she’s added “Stuck With U” to that growing list.
