GUWAHATI: Assam Police have arrested two prime accused in the alleged lynching of a person at Monahkuchi village under Hajo police station in Kamrup district.

According to reports, Sanatan Deka, a vegetable vendor and a resident of Teteliya village, was returning home when his bicycle collided with a vehicle at Monahkuchi near Hajo town on Friday. The two occupants of the car then had an altercation with Deka, and subsequently three others joined in and started beating him up.

Thereafter, Deka, who lay on the road unconscious, was taken to hospital, but reportedly succumbed to his injuries.

“The two prime accused of the Sanatan Deka murder case of Hajo (Kamrup),  Faizur Hoque and Eyusuf Uddin Ahmed, have been apprehended in connection with the Hajo police station case number 480/2020 under Sections 120(B)/302 IPC,” additional director general of police (law and order) GP Singh, informed on Monday.

A case was registered by Kamrup Police following which Hajo police launched a manhunt, leading to the arrest of the two key accused. Three other accused are reportedly absconding.

According to Deka’s family members, the deceased was the sole bread earner. Reportedly, he had worked in a factory but had lost his job during the national lockdown. Thereafter, he started selling vegetables in a market close to his residence.

Hajo MLA Suman Haripriya, who visited Deka’s residence on Monday, condemned the incident and informed the media that the accused have been booked under sections which are “generally non-bailable”.
