Assam floods hit Goalpara, four other districts

GUWAHATI: The flood situation in Assam has worsened with as many as five districts, including Goalpara, affected, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin stated on Monday evening.

The other districts affected in the first wave of the floods in the state are Dibrugarh Lakhimpur Dhemaji and Darrang.

However, no casualties have so far been reported from any affected district, the bulletin informed.

Goalpara remains the worst affected district with as many as 89 villages/localities under Lakhipur and Balijana revenue circles lying submerged under water following incessant rain in the past few days. A state highway at Singri connecting Agia to Lakhipur road was also washed away, inundating several villages under Lakhipur revenue circle.

A population of 30,701 have been affected in the five districts of which, 22,593 have been affected in Goalpara district alone. As many as 8941 people are being sheltered in relief camps/centres in Lakhipur and Balijana revenue circles.

Rescue operations by the State Disaster Rescue Force and National Disaster Rescue Force are under way with 400 people evacuated to safer places.

Till Monday morning, two rivers, Jia Bharali in Sonitpur district and Puthimari in Kamrup district, were flowing above danger level.

The Regional Meteorological Centre at Borjhar here in its weather bulletin on Monday evening, warned of very heavy showers at isolated places of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya in the next 24 hours.
