Crowd cheer on rugby teams as mass brawl erupts

Footage has emerged of a violent brawl during a rugby match between Treorchy and St Peter's.

The video shows the mass confrontation unfold in the Division 1 East Central clash at the Roath-based side's ground, with supporters heard urging on the players amid the violence.

Two red cards and two yellow cards were issued at the time as a result of the incident.

An investigation was then launched after the referee's report was submitted.

A WRU disciplinary panel found both red cards, one for each side, were not proven, determining that the offence did not satisfy the prescription provided within Law 9.12- covering physical abuse - and were satisfied that the players did not “strike”.

The panel issued the clubs warnings to remind them of their responsibilities, and to ensure scenes such as this are not repeated in the future.

Played out on January 4, St Peter's eventually suffered a 25-20 defeat to Treorchy.

A separate incident involving Treorchy unfolded two weeks later against Cambrian RFC which saw a total of four players red carded. Both clubs are due to appear before a WRU disciplinary panel next week.
