Jamie Carragher claims Everton’s Jordan Pickford is not yet a great goalkeeper

by

Jamie Carragher has criticised Everton’s Jordan Pickford by stating he’s not yet a great goalkeeper and that he needs to try take his game up another level.

The 25-year-old was the hero of the 2018 World Cup for England when he helped them reach the semi-finals and is still the number one option in Gareth Southgate’s squad.

He moved to Goodison Park for £30million (Daily Mail) back in 2017 and enjoyed a strong first year impressing on Merseyside.

But the shot-stopper is arguably having his poorest Everton season to date during his third campaign with the Merseyside outfit and has made a number of individual errors.

Carragher claims that Pickford wouldn’t come into Chelsea’s plans if they were to go searching for a new goalkeeper and that it should tell him a lot about where he’s currently at.

“I would say to Pickford that there is no agenda, rather the scrutiny is a consequence of being an England international,” Carragher wrote in the Telegraph.

“It is clear to me that he is struggling with the criticisms, and anybody would, but dealing with it and using it as motivation is one of the great challenges of the game.

“Pickford needs to remember his strengths. At his best he is a fearless, instinctive goalkeeper. He is a good goalkeeper but not yet a great one and if he is realistic it is now, at 25, and in his third season at Everton that he needs to make that step up to being one of the best in the Premier League.

“If Chelsea are to recruit a new goalkeeper this summer my argument would be that Pickford would not be first in their thoughts, and that should tell him something.

TBR’s View:

Pickford is the fixed number one at Everton and for now still retains the jersey for England too, but there has been a decline in his performances during the past year that he needs to try solve.

There are at least a handful of goalkeepers in the Premier League that are levels above him and his ambition has to be to get the best out of himself.

He is still relatively young for a goalkeeper aged just 25, but does have plenty of experience under his belt and needs to try find some consistency in net for Carlo Ancelotti’s team.
