A man who was kept in isolation at a Scots university over coronavirus fears has been given the all clear by medical officials.

The 'member of the Heriot Watt community’ was being tested on Thursday after he reported some symptoms associated with the deadly virus.

University officials kept him in isolation as a precaution at Heriot Watt's Edinburgh campus as he awaited the results of his tests.

The university has confirmed to the Daily Record that he is now considered ‘well’ after his test came back negative.

Ann Marie Dalton-Pillay, secretary of the university, said: “I am pleased to confirm a member of our University community has been confirmed negative for Covid-19 (coronavirus) and is now considered to be well.

“We are unaware of any other cases.

“Our university continues to operate as normal, across all campuses, and the health and wellbeing of our students and staff remains our utmost priority.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone at our Edinburgh campus for their cooperation and understanding.”

The man was one of a number of people being tested for the deadly coronavirus - now known as Covid-19 - in Scotland.

Around 200 patients have been tested for the disease, all of which have come back negative according to the Scottish Government.

More than 1,300 people have died worldwide since the outbreak of the disease in the Chinese city of Wuhan last month.

Nine people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the UK out of the 2,521 that have been checked for the virus.
