Is Tails in the New Sonic the Hedgehog Movie?
by Rebecca AlterWarning: This post contains spoilers about the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie and its post-credits scenes.
So you want to do the reasonable thing on Valentine’s Day, which is take your Valentine to a romantic screening of Sonic the Hedgehog. You’ve promised them that, no, Sonic doesn’t still look like that, and you’ve reminded them of how much they enjoyed James Marsden in Westworld. (Isn’t any movie he does kind of a rom-com by default?) But you both still have reservations because you’re worried about one thing: Is Tails in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie?
Miles “Tails” Prower is, of course, a sweet young fox and friend to Sonic. He is good at machines and he spins his double-tails to help him fly like a helicopter. Duh. First introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 game in 1992, Tails is arguably the heart of the Sega franchise, beyond being a beloved sidekick. But when trailers came out for the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie, it didn’t look as though any of the game’s usual cast of animal characters were in it, besides Sonic and his archnemesis, Doctor Robotnik. In the movie itself, Sonic repeatedly talks about having never had a real friend before, clearly making it seem as though he’s in a different timeline than the ones depicted in the cartoon, games, and comics. So does Tails show up in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie at all?
Yes, but you’ll have to wait until the very end. In the second post-credits sequence, an adorable CG-rendered Tails steps out of a portal into the outskirts of Green Hills, Montana, the small Earth town where Sonic has decided to remain. He checks some sort of tracking device and says, “If these readings are accurate, I’ve found him. He’s here! I hope I’m not too late.” Then he spins his tails and flies off over the treetops in search, we’re guessing, of Sonic. We’ve got chills … and huge sequel-setup vibes.
