Mel Tucker Reportedly Makes Decision On Mark Dantonio’s Coaching Staff

Earlier this week, former Colorado head coach Mel Tucker took over as the new head coach of the Michigan State Spartans. The job opened up after Mark Dantonio shockingly announced his retirement the day before National Signing Day.

The Spartans reportedly went after Tucker initially, but he turned them down. After Michigan State upped its offer, Tucker had no choice but to accept.

His new deal pays him double what his salary was at Colorado and the pool of money to hire assistant coaches is equally substantial. According to a new report from Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press, Tucker made his first decision regarding the Michigan State coaching staff.

Solari reported Tucker doesn’t plan to keep any of the assistant coaches from Mark Dantonio’s staff.

It’s not surprising to see a new head coach want to choose his own staff.

Tucker might want to build his own culture in East Lansing, which can only be achieved by gutting the current staff.

Tucker needs to get the ball rolling with Spring Ball just around the corner.
