Florida student with weapon detained during code red alert

by

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) — A student with a weapon was taken into custody at a central Florida high school campus Friday morning following a threat that was circulating on social media.

Lake Brantley High School was placed on lockdown early Friday, Altamomte Springs police spokeswoman Michelle Sosa told news outlets. She said “all students and staff are safe.”

She didn’t release the name of the student, describe the weapon or say whether the student was related to a threat that had been posted on Snapchat earlier Friday.

The threat came on the second anniversary of a shooting that killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

Sosa said the code red alert has been canceled at the school, but law enforcement officers would remain there throughout the day.

News of the code red was posted on the school’s Twitter account at 8:30 a.m. Friday, notifying families that police were investigating a situation on campus. The school sent another message at 9:15 a.m. saying the lockdown was prompted by “a social media threat that has been circulating.”

An investigation was continuing.
