Trailer and Promo Round-up: Week of February 9, 2020

by

While the Super Bowl last week brought with it the release of a massive number of  trailers and promos, this week, with Hollywood's awards show season winding down, the focus has shifted slightly to upcoming video games. With that in mind, there was a small decrease in new trailers and promos, but CBR has tracked down all the biggest releases from the past several days.

Below are this past week's biggest and best trailers and promos spotlighting upcoming films, television series and video games.

Altered Carbon

With its Season 2 premiere weeks away, Netflix released the first full trailer for its hit sci-fi series Altered Carbon this week. The upcoming season stars Anthony Mackie as the latest incarnation of futuristic investigator Takeshi Kovacs. The show is set in a world where the rich and powerful can continually resurrect themselves in new host bodies. The trailer reveals Takeshi awakening in a place far different from the one he remembers.

Developed by Laeta Kalogridis, who also executive produces the series, Altered Carbon Season 2 stars Anthony Mackie, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Lela Loren, Simone Missick, Chris Conner, Dina Shihabi and Torben Liebrecht, with Will Yun Lee and James Saito. Season 2 debuts Feb. 27 on Netflix.

Brahms: The Boys II

The Boy, from 2016 was a cult-favorite horror film that saw Lauren Cohan and Rupert Evans face off against a sinister porcelain doll. The film gets a direct sequel this month with Brahms: The Boy II. A second theatrical trailer for the upcoming film has been released, revealing a new family moving into Heelshire Mansion, and the family's son becoming unhealthily attached to the eponymous doll.

Directed by William Brent Bell from a script by Stacey Menear, Brahms: The Boy 2 stars Katie Holmes, Owain Yeoman, Christopher Convery and Ralph Ineson. The film arrives in theaters Feb. 21.

Disney+

With subscribers continuing to sign up for Disney's premium streaming service Disney+, the digital platform released a new promo reminding audiences of the studio's extensive library of classic, family-friendly films. Appealing to sentimental nostalgia, the promo blends both iconic Disney films and the company's recent acquisitions from 20th Century Fox's library, including The Sound of Music.

Disney+ is available to download now in the United States, Canada and the Netherlands. The service will make its way to European markets on March 24.

Dragon Ball FighterZ

Over two years since its original launch, Dragon Ball FighterZ remains enduringly popular with fighting game aficionados and fans of the iconic anime franchise alike. Bandai Namco has confirmed a third season of DLC content for the title, increasing the roster by an additional five playable characters. The season's first two downloadable fighters, Kefla and Ultra Instinct Goku, were showcased in a new trailer that debuted their hard-hitting game moves.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is developed by Arc System Works and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. Season 3 launches with Kefla on February 28.

The Flash

The second half of The Flash Season 6 is exploring the fall-out of the Arrowverse's "Crisis on Infinite Earths," most notably with the introduction of new villains, including Eva McCullough, a new Mirror Master. Mirror Master's first target is Iris West-Allen, who is replaced by a sinister doppelgänger from the pocket MirrorVerse dimension while the real Iris is trapped in this inter-dimensional prison. The CW has released a promo for Season 6's twelfth episode, titled "A Girl Named Sue," focusing on Iris and her time caught in this strange pocket dimension.

Airing Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/CT on The CW, The Flash stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Carlos Valdes, Danielle Panabaker, Tom Cavanagh, Jesse L. Martin, Danielle Nicolet and Hartley Sawyer.

The Green Knight

Acclaimed filmmaker David Lowery reimagines Arthurian legend with an all-star cast headed by Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander and Joel Edgerton in The Green Knight. The upcoming fantasy film has released its first teaser trailer, with Patel's Sir Gawain confronting the eponymous warrior in single combat to prove his worth to himself and the rest of the kingdom.

Written and directed by David Lowery, The Green Knight stars Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sarita Choudhury, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Barry Keoghan and Ralph Ineson. The film arrives in theaters May 29.

The Hunt

One of the most contentious films originally slated for release last year was Universal Pictures' The Hunt, which follows a group of wealthy elites who hunt humans for sport. Pulled from its planned release date over content concerns and the current social climate, the film has been rescheduled to come out this year, and has a new trailer embracing the controversy surrounding it.

Written by Damon Lindelof and Nick Cuse and directed by Craig Zobel, The Hunt stars Emma Roberts, Justin Hartley, Genn Howerton, Ike Barinholtz, Betty Gilpin, Amy Madigan, Hilary Swank and Ethan Suplee. The film arrives in theaters March 13.

The Iron Mask

While Jackie Chan never made it into an Expendables movie, the beloved Hong Kong action star and Arnold Schwarzenegger will go head-to-head against each other in the action-comedy The Iron Mask. Already released in several overseas territories, the movie is a global adventure spanning from China to the United Kingdom. In the new trailer, Chan's character is seen in a London prison before fighting a British officer portrayed by Schwarzenegger (making no effort to employ an English accent) in a deliriously over-the-top action sequence.

Directed by Oleg Stepchenko, The Iron Mask stars Jackie Chan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Flemyng, Charles Dance and Rutger Hauer. The film will be released in the United Kingdom on April 10 with a North American release currently unspecified.

Legends of Tomorrow

In Season 5 of DC's Legends of Tomorrow, the Arrowverse's time-traveling team of misfit superheroes is tracking down Encores, historical figures resurrected from Hell to wreck havoc on the space-time continuum. A promo for the season's fourth episode, titled "A Head of Her Time," has the heroes arrive in Versailles on the eve of the French Revolution to confront Marie Antoinette, with the promise that heads will roll.

Airing Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow stars Caity Lotz, Dominic Purcell, Brandon Routh, Nick Zano, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Tala Ashe, Matt Ryan, Jes Macallan and Courtney Ford.

Marvel Realm of Champions

The popular Marvel Entertainment mobile game Contest of Champions receives its own spiritual sequel later this year with Marvel Realm of Champions. Taking inspiration from the 2015 comic-book crossover event Secret Wars, the upcoming game takes place in an alternate future for the Marvel Universe on the composite world of Battlerealm, which is divided among factions inspired by the iconic Marvel heroes and villains. The latest promo for the game spotlights the Kingdom of Wakanda, a faction inspired by the Black Panther's legacy, led by T'Challa's younger sister Queen Shuri.

Developed by Kabam, Marvel Realm of Champions is expected to arrive on the App Store and Google Play for iOS and Android devices later this year.

Mulan

The latest television spot for Disney's live-action remake of Mulan continues to put the emphasis on action, with the Chinese warrior's father praying for her safety before the young woman is seen in the midst of epic battle sequences against the invading Huns. Boasting wushu-inspired fights and sweeping skirmishes, the remake of the classic 1998 animated film has been transformed into a full-on historical epic.

Directed by Niki Caro, Disney's Mulan stars Yifei Liu as Mulan, Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan, and Yoson An as Cheng Honghui, with Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor. The film opens March 27.

Pokemon Masters

Over twenty years since its debut, Pokemon continues to expand its global domination with more mobile games offering players the opportunity to catch and battle Pokemon. The latest mobile game, Pokemon Masters, announced a new, free update adding franchise mainstay Professor Oak as a sync partner for player characters with a trailer showing the professor leaving the comfort of his lab to prove himself to be the very best.

Developed by DeNA, Pokemon Masters is available for Android and iOS devices. The latest update will be released on Feb. 14.

Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris

One of the most popular anime adaptations is Sword Art Online, and the franchise is about to make its worldwide debut on current generation home video-game consoles this May in Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris. Bandai Namco has released a gameplay trailer for the title that highlights the immersive universe of player characters who will enter virtual reality fantasy worlds. Most intriguing is the game's tactical A.I. learning system, with computer-controlled party members learning and replicating the player's favorite strategies as the game progresses.

Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris is developed by Bandai Namco. The game arrives on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC May 22.

Stranger Things

The events of Stranger Things Season 3 left the fate of main character Jim Hopper unclear, as he died during the destruction of the portal beneath Starcourt Mall. The teaser for the show's fourth season reveals Hopper survived and is now working in a prison camp in Russia, leaving a lot of questions just as to how he'll escape the nation.

Stranger Things was created by the Duffer Brothers and stars Winona Ryder, Millie Bobbie Brown, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Priah Ferguson, Cary Elwes, Jake Busey and Maya Thurman-Hawke. The first three seasons are currently available on Netflix with a fourth already in the works.
