Paul Scholes questions how four Man Utd stars will fit in around Fernandes
Paul Scholes has given his approval of Manchester United’s midfield following the January addition of Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon.
Scholes was a key part of United’s midfield for the best part of two decades, but the position hasn’t always been a strong point for the Red Devils in recent years.
Last season saw Fred struggle to impose himself following a big money move from Shakhtar Donetsk, while Paul Pogba has been struggling with injuries this term.
However, things are beginning to shape up for United in the middle of the park after they signed Fernandes in January and with Fred and Nemanja Matic rediscovering their form recently, as well as Scott McTominay impressing early in the season, Scholes now thinks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a serious selection headache.
He told BBC Five Live (via the MEN): “I think Matic has done really well in the last few weeks, we know Fred has really improved over the last six or seven weeks.
“He still needs to bring goals and assists to his game but you’d have to put him there. McTominay’s form in the early part of the season and then you’ve got Fernandes and Pogba.
“Fernandes could possibly play in a role further up the field, he looks like he’s got goals in him, like he wants to shoot, like he wants to make goals, so I think it’s a case now of United of just trying to fit the best players in and get them all on the pitch whatever position they play.”
Someone who is a little more cautious about Fernandes is former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who has told Sky Sports that he thinks United’s clash with Chelsea on Monday night will be a tough test for the former Sporting playmaker.
“It will be interesting what happens in that area because that’s something where United wanted to strengthen, with Pogba and McTominay being out,” explained Carragher.
“So I think that’s where the game will be won.
“It will be interesting to see how Fernandes copes. It’s completely different playing away at Chelsea than playing at home to Wolves.”
