Brazilian professional footballer Malcom has taken a swipe against his former club Barcelona on their over dependence on Argentina international Lionel Messi.

Lionel Messi has been superb for years at Barcelona since he got into the first team and has won many titles with the Catalan giants.

He started his playing career at Barcelona's famous academy La Masia before he was promoted to the main team based on his superb performances.

Messi has never played for any other club than Barcelona and he is currently spending his 16th season at the Camp Nou where he has scored 622 goals in 713 games.

Having won six Ballon d'Or awards so far in his career, the 32-year-old is regarded as one of the best footballers in the history of football.

Malcom has now suggested that Lionel Messi is the driving force behind Barcelona in all competitions.

Before leaving Barcelona last August for a move to Zenit Saint Petersburg, Malcom played for Barcelona for a season and scored four goals in 24 ties for the Catalans.

This season, Malcom has been battling against injuries and has only played one game for his new Russian side.

While speaking with Marca, Malcom explained that Lionel Messi is the one who has been covering many Barcelona problems.

''Yes, some of them, yes. Leo is the best player in the world and sometimes he does many crazy things to help Barcelona out.

''That is why when people talk about Barcelona, they must speak about Lionel Messi,''. Malcom explained to Marca.

Lionel Messi was recently linked with a move to join Juventus after having a bust up with Barcelona director Eric Abidal.

Catalans currently sit second on the Spanish La Liga table and they are three points behind leaders Real Madrid.
