Blurry First Look at ‘The Batman’ Reminds Us of Daredevil

by

The Batman is increasingly becoming a real movie. With all the drama surrounding Ben Affleck and the old DCEU out of the way, Matt Reeves is firmly in the director’s chair for this next reboot of the caped crusader. Robert Pattinson plays Bruce Wayne and a murderer’s row of fellow actors fill out his cast of enemies and allies. Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon. Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman. Andy Serkis as Alfred. John Turturro as Carmine Falcone. Paul Dano as The Riddler. And Colin Farrell as the Penguin.

But it’s one thing to read about a movie. Eventually we need to see something for ourselves. So here’s your first blurry look at The Batman.

This isn’t a trailer or even a teaser. It’s a camera test to show off how the new costume looks on screen. And by releasing it to the public, the studio won’t have to worry about unflattering spy photos from the set. So really all we get here is a moody costume photo shoot that apparently made Pattinson feel very powerful.

But that hasn’t stopped fans from picking this apart! At this point there have been so many live-action Batman costumes that when I saw this all I said was “Yup, that’s a Batman.” But look closer and you’ll see details like a more hand-stitched cowl, shifting armor plates reminiscent of the video games, and a new metal Batman symbol on the chest possibly made out of the gun that killed the Waynes???

Lots of folks on Twitter are also comparing this to Daredevil, what with the red lighting and the more DIY feel and the fact that Batman’s eyes are covered. Given how much gritty Frank Miller DNA both comic book superheroes share this might have even been intentional.

We’ll see this costume really put to the test when The Batman arrives in theaters June 2021.
