Ronald Lee Moore, who was named in ‘Serial,’ linked to South Carolina cold-case murder

Ronald Lee Moore, a convicted serial burglar from Baltimore County, Maryland, came up as a DNA match in connection with the slaying of Shawn Marie Neal — who was 23 when she was strangled to death in her North Myrtle Beach condo on June 2, 1996, North Myrtle Beach police said in a Wednesday press conference.
Detectives reopened the investigation into Neal’s death in November 2017, taking DNA evidence from towels and a mattress spread found in the condo. Authorities ran it through the national database and matched Moore to DNA evidence found on the victim’s clothing.

Although the felon had no ties to North Myrtle Beach, he did visit friends in Louisiana, authorities said. He may have traveled through the area on his way from Maryland to the Bayou State, according to investigators.
Back in 2014, the “Serial” podcast named Moore as a possible suspect in the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee in Baltimore. He was released from prison 10 days before Lee vanished. The convicted burglar was also a suspect in a series of unsolved burglaries, sexual assaults and a homicide in Maryland in 1999.
But the DNA evidence tested in Lee’s case did not match Moore — or the man convicted in Lee’s death, Adnan Syed, according to the Baltimore Sun.
He died while serving time for unspecified charges in Louisiana in 2008, North Myrtle Beach police said.
Five years later, using DNA technology, police named him a suspect in the 1999 death of Annelise Hyang Suk Lee in Baltimore.
Detective Mike Swarthout of the North Myrtle Beach police reached out to Neal’s family about the break in the cold case — and said they were shocked to hear the news, WPDE reported.
Multiple agencies, including the FBI, are working to determine whether any other unsolved cases can be attributed to Moore, according to the report.
