BMW has just pulled the wraps off its latest "Art Car," sustaining a tradition that's been an integral part of BMW's identity since the mid-70s. The work of contemporary artist FUTURA 2000, the newest addition to the Art Car family is based on the 2020 BMW M2 Competition, and it's embarking upon its first public showing at the second annual Frieze Los Angeles Art Fair at Paramount Pictures Studios, now through February 16.

FUTURA's new Art Car design is just the first of three - as in, there will be another two FUTURA-designed BMW Art Cars by the time all this is done.

In addition, there will also be a limited-run BMW M2 Competition available for purchase with interior and exterior graphics inspired by FUTURA's work. It's unknown how many examples will be made, but it won't be a large number. Those cars will be available to purchase from June 2020.

"The BMW M2 Competition is dynamic, extroverted and, to a certain degree, pleasantly provocative," FUTURA 2000 said of the car. "I consider it a great honor to be able to add a special touch to this vehicle."

The BMW M2 Competition is arguably one of the purest, most driver-oriented cars currently in the BMW lineup, delivering a stout 405 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque from a twin-turbocharged S55 3.0L inline-six, with a choice of either a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic or 6-speed manual transmission. The sprint to 60 mph stands at just 4.3 seconds with the former transmission, and it features redesigned oiling and cooling systems so as to better hold up to sustained performance driving.

The limited-run FUTURA-styled BMW M2 Competition ups the ante with a special, individually created FUTURA 2000 design on the center console, black-and-ivory Dakota leather M sport seats with blue contrast stitching, an M Alcantara-and-leather-wrapped sports steering wheel, and a door sill trim piece wearing the limited-edition number and FUTURA's signature. On the outside are distinctive painted surfaces on the front and rear aprons and the side sills.

We can't wait to see how the other two cars in BMW's newest Art Cars series turn out.
