Green Day Will Play “The Hits” On This Year’s Hella Mega Tour

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has given an insight into the setlist for Green Day’s upcoming Hella Mega Tour with Fall Out Boy and Weezer.

We’re a week on from the release of Green Day’s 4K-rated Father Of All… album, and while the band are on course for their fourth UK Number One, they are also now turning their attention to the upcoming Hella Mega Tour with Fall Out Boy and Weezer in the summer.

In a new interview on Apple Music’s Beats 1, Zane Lowe asks Billie Joe Armstrong about the “overall mood” of the setlist for the tour, to which the frontman laughs: “It’s going to be a lot of familiar tunes that are gonna be played. You know, we’re going to play a couple of new songs, and then definitely going to blast into all of the stuff that people (pauses)… all the favourites.”

Zane jokes that the singer and guitarist has historically struggled to admit that Green Day have “hits”, and Billie Joe emphatically says, “We’re playing the hits!”

Interestingly, while Green Day’s setlist may be looking back across the more popular material from their 30-plus-year career, they’ve always mixed things up across tours, and are known for dropping in rarely-played gems as and when they feel like it. There’s a chance they might be releasing even more fresh material before they hit the road which could well end up in the setlist, too.

“We have more songs,” Billie Joe continues. “I’ve written, like, three or four since the first single [Father Of All…] came out [last September]. I mean, the way people are able to put out music now, we’re so stoked, because now we can just put stuff out anytime we want – we’re completely unstructured. So to put out a single here, or an EP there, or contribute something to what would eventually be an album… we don’t really know, but we’re into it. So hopefully maybe there’ll be even more music this summer. We’ll see what happens.”

When asked how many songs Green Day have leftover from the Father Of All… sessions, Billie Joe reveals, “We’ve got, like, seven songs left from that session. And then, yeah, there’s like four more [that have been written since then], so we have almost another album’s worth of stuff right now.”

Hell yeah. BRB while we go and write-up our dream Green Day setlist…
