Gerard Butler to carry Sparta’s torch ahead of Tokyo Olympics
by Katy PaganGERARD BUTLER has bagged another Spartan role as he's set to carry their torch before the Tokyo Olympics.
The Mayor of Sparta, Petros Doukas, confirmed they have signed up the actor to run as torchbearer on March 14.
The 50-year-old Scot will also be in the city for the 2,500th anniversary of the battle of Thermopylae - which his epic Greek movie 300 is based on.
Hollywood A-lister Gerard, from Paisley, played warrior King Leonidas in the 2006 movie based on the historic battle against the Persians in 480BC.
The gritty action movie - which also stars Game of Thrones’ Lena Headey and David Wenham - grossed $400m (£307m) at the box office, establishing Butler as major action movie lead.
Mr Doukas said that Gerard will be a guest of honour in the festivities.
We told earlier how the actor was forced to warn fans about imposter accounts trying to scam them online.
He was forced to address the issue on his official platforms after a number of followers said they’d been contacted by suspicious accounts.
It comes after he surprised fans by stopping of at a Bearsden cafe for coffee.
The Hollywood superstar snapped a pic with workers at Grace and Favour as he made a surprise visit.
They posted the snap on Instagram, and wrote: “Dish of the day at G&F”.
