Reported Arsenal target Kevin Volland open to Premier League move
by Tom ProcterBayer Leverkusen forward Kevin Volland has opened the door to a move to the Premier League this summer, putting on red alert after recent links.
Sky in Germany reported the 10-cap Germany international emerged as a possible target for the Gunners in January, but a move didn’t materialise with Bayer wanting to retain their best players amid a push for Europe.
The star has been in good form throughout 2019/20, scoring 11 goals and making seven assists in 29 appearances in all competitions.
Arsenal couldn’t get a deal done last month, but may now feel there’s hope of something happening in the summer, with Volland talking up a move to the English top-flight in an interview with Sport1.
He said (translated by bulinews.com): “The Premier League is a very interesting league for me. The pace is extremely high, and the league requires a lot of running. That would suit me. But you never know what will happen.
“I’m not the type to say that I absolutely have to play in England, Italy or Spain. I feel very comfortable in Leverkusen and leave everything open.
“I’m relatively calm and haven’t held any talks about my future yet.”
Volland’s current contract with Leverkusen runs until the summer of 2021.
TBR’s view – Arsenal’s invitation?
Perhaps Volland’s comments will tempt Arsenal into making a move this summer.
There’s a possibility Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and/or Alexandre Lacazette could leave the Emirates, meaning a replacement would be needed.
Volland would arguably be a downgrade, but he still has great ability and crucially, versatility.
For Leverkusen, the £17 million signing (ESPN) has amassed 49 goals and 29 assists in 137 appearances and at Hoffenheim, he scored 36 and assisted 39 in 144.
It could be encouraging for Arsenal to know Volland believes he’d suit the English game, should there still be any lingering interest.
