Report: Manchester United want to sign Tottenham star Eric Dier
by Will ButcherThe Daily Star have claimed that Manchester United are considering a move to sign Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier ahead of the summer window, with Dier’s long-term future at Spurs in doubt.
Dier, 26, is struggling to find his best form at Tottenham this season – even after the appointment of Jose Mourinho. The England cap has been linked with a move to Manchester United in the past, especially when Mourinho was at Old Trafford.
The ex-Sporting Lisbon star’s contract at Spurs has less than 18 months left to run, and Spurs are keen to tie Dier down to new, fresh terms. But Spurs are also willing to ‘listen to offers’ for Dier, given they want to avoid another Christian Eriksen saga.
Since his £4million (ESPN) move from Lisbon, Dier has clocked up 230 appearances for Tottenham in six seasons. But this summer may see Dier end his stay in north London, with a switch to Old Trafford in the offing.
TBR’s view – Dier an excellent replacement for Matic
Dier has struggled at Spurs and once linked with United and Bayern Munich for around £50million (Sun), Tottenham will have to accept offers much smaller than that eight-figure fee. Levy, though, is renowned for his bargaining.
United are set to lose Nemanja Matic at the end of the season on a free transfer – unless they activate a year’s extension. But bringing Dier to Old Trafford would see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer boast a younger and better alternative.
Landing Dier would be top business, but Spurs should look to keep the ex-Everton loanee.
