Supreme Court’s judgement: Protest rocks Bayelsa state

Thousands of women took over the streets in Yenagoa to block major roads in order to protest the Supreme Court judgement that stopped David Lyon's inauguration as the next governor of Bayelsa state.

According to The Nation, the protesters are insisting that without Lyon no handover of power would be conducted in the state. The spontaneous protest which started Thursday night, February 13, rocked different parts of the Bayelsa state capital.

The demonstration that started with youths blocking famous road in Yenagoa was freely joined by people that had few placards.

Singing solidarity songs while displaying the All Progressives Congress (APC) flags, youth refused to vacate the roads leaving motorists and commuters stranded.

A commuter who witnessed the obstacle narrating her experience to the newspaper publication said: “It was a terrible experience when I ran into them. They refused to vacate the major road. There was no vehicular movement of any sort. People were forced to return to their homes.”

However, the tension in the state forced many Bayelsa state residents to stay indoors on the morning of Friday, February 14. Investigations by The Nation revealed that the venue of the inauguration scheduled to hold at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex was deserted.

Nonetheless, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has prepared a new venue in front of the Governor’s office at the Government House for its candidate. This is in anticipation that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would issue a certificate of return to Senator Duoye Diri.

Meanwhile, Seriake Dickson has insisted Senator Diri would be sworn in as the next Bayelsa state governor following the Supreme Court judgement.

Legit.ng previously reported that David Lyon of the All Progressives Congress (APC) lost his bid to occupy the number one seat in the state, no thanks to the Supreme Court verdict that nullified his election. This came hours to his swearing-in as governor of Bayelsa.

It came as a surprise when the governor-elect was sacked by the apex judicial body. Lyon was already warming up for his swearing-in which was scheduled for Friday, February 14, when the news came in.

In a related development, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Adams Oshiomhole, has vowed that the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Douye Diri will never be sworn in as Bayelsa governor.

Oshiomhole was by this remark reacting to the Supreme Court's verdict with sacked the Bayelsa governor-elect, David Lyon, on Thursday, February 13.
