Sam Smith branded Valentine's Day "offensive" as they compared the romantic holiday to a funeral.

The singer, 27, lashed out at the most loved-up day of the year as they revealed the reason behind their hatred is always being single.

During a chat on Capital Breakfast with Roman Kemp, Sam admitted they wanted to "destroy" Valentine's Day.

They said: "It’s my twenty seventh year of being single on Valentine’s Day. I’m over it. It’s offensive. Yeah I’m sad today. Today’s a sad day. It’s more like a funeral."

Over on Heart Breakfast with Jamie and Amanda, Sam added: "Look I don’t want to be a Debbie downer but this isn’t my favourite day. I’m quite anti Valentine’s day."

Jamie chipped in: "Am I right in saying it was invented by the card industry anyway?"

Amanda said: "It was invented by Clintons."

And Sam confessed "Exactly. I used to work in Clinton cards, that’s probably why I hate Valentine’s day."

On Capital, Sam also gave their thoughts on Billie Eilish's new James Bond theme song, No Time To Die.

They said: "It’s so beautiful. I literally woke up like an hour and a bit ago and I was sitting on the toilet listening to it. It’s so beautiful.

"It depends on how much pressure you put on yourself I think. I put a lot of pressure on myself and I didn’t realise how people really have in their head what a Bond song is so you’re never gonna please everyone but she’s done such a beautiful job and she’s kept it classic which I’m so happy about. Yeah I’m really impressed I think it’s amazing. Everything she does I think is amazing."

Sam recorded the official Bond song for Spectre in 2015. Their track was named Writing's On The Wall.

Last year, Sam came out as non-binary and released a candid statement after asking people to refer to them with different pronouns.

The Stay With Me hitmaker admitted to struggling with gender identity their whole life, saying they've been "at war" with themselves.

Sam wrote on Twitter: "Today is a good day so here goes. I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM after a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out...

"I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but f**k it!

"I understand there will be many mistakes and mis gendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now. Thank you."

They added: "P.s. I am at no stage just yet to eloquently speak at length about what it means to be non binary but I can’t wait for the day that I am. So for now I just want to be VISIBLE and open. If you have questions and are wondering what this all means I’ll try my best to explain...

"These are activists and leaders of the non binary/trans community that have helped me and given me so much clarity and understanding.

"Love you all. I’m scared s**tless, but feeling super free right now. Be kind x"
