Alison Hammond has paid tribute to her ‘beautiful, wonderful’ mum who has died from liver and lung cancer.

The This Morning host posted the news on Instagram along with a number of sweet photos of Maria, who was laid to rest on Thursday.

Alison, 45, also dedicated Valentine’s Day to her beloved mum as she opened up about her family tragedy to her 479,000 followers.

She said: “Today I dedicate Valentine’s Day to my beautiful, wonderful Mother Maria who passed away from liver and lung cancer.

“Yesterday my family and I celebrated her amazing life and laid her to rest in a beautiful ceremony she would have been proud of.”

Alison had not been vocal about her mum’s condition but among the photos she posted was one of her mum in a hospital bed.

Other photos include several throwback photos of Maria through the years, along with a few snaps of the proud TV presenter and her mum.

“Thank you mummy for giving me the strength to move forward in the knowledge that you’re ok and with God in Heaven now,” Alison continued.

“I will always remember you and try and make you proud.

“I love you mum.”

Followers left condolence messages for Alison.

One said: “Big huge hugs Alison u are such an amazing person..your mum will look down and watch over you...allow yourself the time to grieve tol..u must be so busy with your career as it is..self care and love for u will help...its hard to do that sometimes. Take care. Xxx”

A second replied: “Deepest sympathy at this heartbreaking time I absolutely feel your pain losing my mum to cancer God bless you all xxx”

A third posted: “I'm so sorry Alison, I'm sure you always did make her proud.”

Another agreed: “I’m so sorry for your loss but I suspect your mummy was already extremely proud of you in all you’ve achieved. Much love and strength.”
