Arsenal struggling to agree new contract with Bukayo Saka

Arsenal are at risk of losing Bukayo Saka on a free transfer at the end of next season as they struggle to agree a new contract with the teenager.

The 18-year-old’s current deal expires in the summer of 2021 and there has been no breakthrough in talks over a new contract with an agreement still a long way off, reports the Telegraph.

Saka has been a regular in the first team since Mikel Arteta took over as manager in December, filling in at left-back with Kieran Tierney and Sead Kolasinac out injured.

His performances have been impressive and other big clubs are aware of his progress and his contract situation, which would allow him to move next year with only a compensation fee applicable.

Liverpool, Manchester United and Bayern Munich have all been credited with an interest in the exciting youngster, who would have a wealth of options open to him if he decides to run down his contract.

Arteta will be keen to keep hold of one of his most promising young prospects, and a player who has impressed him with his versatility.

Saka’s favoured position is on the left wing, but has played well at left-back, where Arteta sees a future for the teenager.

‘I think he could (have a future at left-back) because he’s willing to learn, he is applying himself big time he is someone that’s has never played (that position) before but he’s really trying to do it as well as possible,’ said Arteta in January.

‘You can see that he’s got many strengths to play in that position. Obviously he needs games, he needs experience and he needs to improve in some areas but that’s very good.’

Kolasinac and new loan signing Cedric Soares are pushing for returns from injury ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Newcastle at the Emirates on Sunday, but Saka is expected to start.
