Former Chiefs Midfielder: Players Don’t Pick Themselves

by

A former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder has opened up about how he struggled for game-time under Ernst Middendorp.

James Kotei left Amakhosi in January this year without making a single appearance for the club despite being on their books for six months.

In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma this week, the 26-year-old Ghanaian, who has since penned a deal with Slavia Mozyr in Belarus, opened up about why he thinks things didn’t work out for him at the club.

“It was not my fault, it was not the club’s fault, but only God knows. I tried to earn playing time, but things did not go well for me there. All these things happen in football though. I don’t know how to answer you, but… okay, I was going to training and working hard every day, but playing time just didn’t come for me. The players do not select themselves, you know,” Kotei said.

“He (Ernst Middendorp) didn’t give me any reason for not playing me. I was just attending normal training duties as a professional player, nothing else. And my culture doesn’t permit me to ask elderly people questions – we submit and obey and work hard, that’s all,” the midfielder added.
