2020 Toyota Yaris Hybrid can do 36 km/l
2020 Yaris Hybrid should be a good addition to Toyota PH's lineup
by Anton AndresNot to be outdone by Honda, Toyota has also released the official numbers for their Yaris Hybrid. It's about time too since it's been months since Toyota first showed the car. Almost four months have passed without them giving more detailed specifications, so this is a welcome bit of news.
By this time, we all know that the Yaris Hybrid uses a 1.5-liter, three-cylinder mill paired to an electric motor. What we didn't know at the time is how much it actually makes. Now we know that the engine alone makes 91 PS and 120 Nm of torque. The hybrid system then provides 79 PS and 141 Nm of torque. Combined output is rated at 116 PS although they did not mention the torque when the two systems are working together.
Compared to the Jazz/Fit Hybrid, the Yaris Hybrid edges out the Honda by 7 horsepower. Again, it remains to be seen how much combined torque the Toyota makes but the Fit/Jazz's 253 Nm figure sets a high bar for the Yaris Hybrid. Unlike the Honda which uses a fixed gear transmission, the Yaris Hybrid uses a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
With the engine and electric motor working together, Toyota claims the Yaris Hybrid can do up to 36 kilometers per liter. With its 36 liter tank, the Yaris has a theoretical range of 1,296 kilometers on one single full tank. The engine the Yaris uses what's called an Atkinson Cycle which helps thermal efficiency and, in turn, fuel economy. For those curious about performance, Toyota says it can do the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 10.5 seconds and tops out at 175 km/h.
The Yaris also comes with non-hybrid options as well. There's a 1.0-liter and 1.5-liter coming soon, both of which are naturally aspirated three-cylinder engines. For now, Toyota has not revealed the specs for those just yet, but they will do so in the coming months. At the opposite end of the spectrum is GR Yaris which is powered by a boosted 1.6-liter that makes over 270 PS. It then sends power to all four wheels, and is paired to a six-speed manual transmission.
