Seven Years Ago Today, Sony Dropped Its PS4 Teaser and the Internet Lost Its Mind
The hype was real
by Robert RamseyYep, it's been seven whole years since Sony released its PlayStation Meeting 2013 trailer, coming out of nowhere to tease the PlayStation 4. The incredibly stylish video -- which we've embedded above -- sent shock waves across the internet. As alluded, the trailer really did catch everyone off guard. Sony had infamously said that it was more than happy to let Microsoft unveil its console first -- and then it went and dropped this announcement.
Taking a trip back in time, we penned this article on the 31st January 2013. An excited Sammy Barker wrote: "Now that’s how you drop a bomb. Sony has announced that it will reveal the future on 20th February at a PlayStation Meeting in New York City. The event – set to start at 18:00PM EST – will almost certainly play host to the PlayStation 4. Are you following this? It’s actually happening."
The situation was very similar to what we're dealing with right now. It had been six long years since the launch of the PlayStation 3, and Sony was keeping quiet on its next-gen plans. Rumours were rife and speculation was everywhere. That said, it does feel like there's more tension in the air this time around as we wait to hear more about the PS5. Although that could just be recency bias on our part. Seven years is a pretty long time, after all.
Of course, this is only relevant because the industry is once again on the cusp of ushering in a new console generation. Heck, some fans reckon Sony might try to replicate its PlayStation Meeting 2013 announcement today, revealing plans for its heavily rumoured PS5 reveal event. We're not convinced, but it would certainly make for a memorable moment.
