Apple's Touch ID Is Still Rumoured to Make a Return in 2021 but It'll Be In the Power Button

by

Reports that Apple will be bringing back Touch ID have been around for a while, and while the latest one is still saying the same thing, the details are slightly different.

The rumours go as far back as 2018 when a patent popped up for a device with both Face ID and Touch ID capabilities. Last year, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo seemed confident that Apple would release a smartphone in 2021 that would include both features on the device, with an in-screen fingerprint reader presumably to keep the bezel to a minimum. Although the company has done an okay job in making Face ID secure and reliable, the same can't be said of the technology for in-display fingerprint scanners, which is perhaps why it's been avoiding it.

Well Ming-Chi Kuo is at it again, and this time, he's suggesting that the 2021 phone that will still feature Touch ID, but that it will be located in the power button. He went on to clarify that this will only be for the low-budget models. These handsets will reportedly be lacking in Face ID and sport an LCD screen rather than OLED, and the fingerprint scanner in the home button is how Apple plans on keeping the device secure. What we don't know is exactly which series of phone this applies to, but either way it seems Apple is reviving the feature. [ Ubergizmo]
