Thug jailed after brutal New Year's eve attack left victim with devastating brain injury
Adam Taylor who believed Jason Webb was responsible for injuring his sister carried out savage revenge attack, jumping and stamping on victim's head and torso
by Ross McCarthy, https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/authors/ross-mccarthy/A thug who left a man with devastating brain injuries in a revenge attack following a New Year's Eve party five years ago has been jailed for 13 years and eight months.
Adam Taylor was described jumping and stamping on Jason Webb's head and torso "like a child jumping on a trampoline" in a road in Kings Heath
Taylor, 34, of Baverstock Road, Druids Heath, had previously been found guilty of causing Mr grievous bodily harm with intent following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court.
The court heard during the trial that Taylor and Mr Webb had been at a family party at Kernthorpe Road, Kings Heath on New Year's eve 2014.
There had been a falling out between their respective girlfriends while Mr Webb also had an argument with the defendant's sister.
A number of people, including the victim, were asked to leave.
Later Taylor's sister returned to the address with a bloodied nose.
Taylor, who believed Mr Webb had caused the injury wanted revenge, and with others, went out looking for Mr Webb and witness Aaron Kelly then saw the defendant jumping and stamping on Mr Webb.
The victim was not discovered until around 7.30am on New Year's day by passers-by and may have been lying in the street for around seven hours.
He had suffered a broken nose and arm as well as a serious brain hemorrhage.
The injury to his brain had left him with a significant cognitive impairment effecting his personality and behaviour.
The court was told he would never be able to work, could no longer live independently or engage in any social activity and needed two to one support.
In a moving statement his mother Anita Larden said "My son has gone from a happy go lucky person to someone who requires 24 hour round the clock care.
"It makes us sad that Jason is never going to grow, or marry or have children of his own.
"Jason has no short term memory which makes visiting difficult. It is truly heart breaking to watch.
"In the first days after the attack we were not sure he was going to survive.
"Our family have lived through five years of hell and are still suffering."
In passing sentence Judge Murray Creed said "Your sister went back to the party with a bloodied nose and it seems you became angry when you saw that.
"I am quite satisfied you went out in a car looking for him."
Referring to phone calls that were subsequently recorded between him and his girlfriend he said "You were selfish and only concerned about yourself.
"I do not accept the degree of remorse that was put forward."
And of the victim he said "He suffered very life changing personality behaviour as a result of the injuries he sustained."
Anthony Cartin, defending, said "These events came about very much in the heat of the moment Mr Taylor's sister having been assaulted by Mr Webb in the way you heard. He has lost his temper."
He claimed there were others who had meted out violence to the victim.
Mr Cartin said Taylor had another side and that he had previously worked as a builder as well as raising money for charity as a stripper.
