How will Netflix end The Crown? From Margaret's death to Will and Kate wedding

by

We know that Netflix royal drama The Crown will finish with its fifth season, but how will it end?

In a statement confirming the show's end, creator Peter Morgan said: "I’m absolutely thrilled to confirm Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty The Queen for the fifth and final season, taking The Crown into the 21st century.

He added: "At the outset I had imagined The Crown running for six seasons but now that we have begun work on the stories for season five it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop."

So, we know the show will go past major events in the 1990s such as the death of Princess Diana- which Peter Morgan depicted before in his acclaimed film The Queen - but which events shall be used to bring the show to an end?

Here are some possibilities for how Netflix will end its award-winning show.

Princess Margaret's death

A vital component of the show since it started is the troubled but strong sibling bond between the Queen and her volatile sister, Princess Margaret.

The final couple of decades of Margaret's life were mired with health issues as a result of heavy smoking and alcohol abuse.

She suffered from pneumonia in 1993 before having three strokes prior to a fatal one in 2002.

It would be surprising if the show didn't include this in its final episodes.

The Queen Mother's death

It would be equally unexpected if the show chose not to include the death of the Queen's other chief constant and support throughout her life: Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

Having been a consistent pillar of royal values throughout the reigns of the Windsor family, the Queen Mother passed away at the age of 101 merely seven weeks after Margaret's death.

This double tragedy is ripe for dramatic content and we doubt Peter Morgan would avoid using it in his scripts.

The Golden Jubilee

The third season closed with the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977 as the Queen faced increasing Republican sentiment and uncertainty over Prince Charles' suitability as her heir.

To take things full circle, Peter Morgan could end the show on a note of triumph by having the Queen enjoy her 2002 Golden Jubilee and embracing the future of the monarchy despite the hardships and personal tragedy she has faced during her own reign.

Prince Charles marries Camilla Parker-Bowles

The third season of The Crown has already examined the early days in the love story of Prince Charles(Josh O'Connor) and Camilla Shand(Emerald Fennell), but as we all know, things didn't end with the marriage of Camilla to Andrew Parker-Bowles (Andrew Buchan).

As the fourth and fifth seasons will examine their adulterous affair while Charles was married to Princess Diana, it could be a natural endpoint to the dramas that will dominate these episodes to conclude the show with Charles wedding the woman he loves: Camilla.

The pair married in 2005 in a civil marriage ceremony that the Queen consented to but did not attend, likely due to her position as Supreme Governor of the Church of England. They did attend the service of blessing and the Wedding reception, however.

Perhaps a warm note to end the mother and son relationship on?

Prince William marries Kate Middleton

Another natural conclusion would be another 'fairytale wedding' as the Queen's grandson and second in the line of succession, Prince William, marries longtime girlfriend Catherine Middleton in 2011.

The pair's marriage and the births of their three children secured the future of the House of Windsor (mostly) for the foreseeable future.

A high-point in the recent history of the monarchy, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge remain two of the most popular members of the Royal Family.

How it won't end: Prince Harry marries Meghan Markle

The Crown's creator Peter Morgan has already confirmed that the show won't be tackling the marriage of Prince Harry to actress Meghan Markle.

Morgan told Entertainment Weekly in 2018: "If I were to write about Meghan Markle I would automatically be writing journalistically.

"I've got nothing to say about Meghan Markle."

He also said: "I feel uncomfortable writing about events within a certain time period. I think there’s a certain amount of time within which, if you write about it, what you do instantly becomes journalistic. Because it’s too close to the moment."

So, we can rule out Harry and Meghan drama and the Prince Andrew issues being portrayed now, then!

The Crown season 4 will be released on Netflix later this year.
