Delta and American Airlines suspend all flights to mainland China over coronavirus

Delta and American Airlines are halting all flights to mainland China over concerns of the deadly coronavirus.

Delta will temporarily suspend all U.S. flights to China from Feb. 6 through April 30, the carrier said Friday.

“Between now and Feb. 5, Delta will continue to operate flights to ensure customers looking to exit China have options to do so,” the company said. “The last China-bound flight departing the U.S. will leave on Monday, Feb. 3 with the last return flight back to the U.S. departing China on Feb. 5.”

Delta operates 42 flights per week between China and the United States.

American Airlines stopped flights to mainland China on Friday, and the suspension will last through March 27, the airline said.

“We will continue to evaluate the schedule for March 28 and beyond and make any adjustments as necessary,” the carrier said.

The State Department issued a “do not travel” advisory for China on Thursday, citing the outbreak.

The World Health Organization declared the virus a global public health emergency, and more than 200 people have died from the coronavirus in recent weeks. All of the fatalities were in China. Nearly 10,000 infections have been confirmed.
