Corvette Stingray C8 Customers Won't Get The Car They Ordered
Customers who wanted an optional aero kit are being told they can't have it.
by Karl FurlongThe last thing you want to hear after you've taken the time to configure and order your perfect supercar is that one of the tempting options you've selected is no longer available. That's the case for some customers who ordered a new Corvette Stingray C8 and ticked the box for one of the most popular - and expensive - options. As is the case for many supercars, the more carbon fiber, the better, and the package in question is the 5VM Visible Carbon Fiber Splitter and Side Skirts.
At a hefty $4,850, it doesn't come cheaply, but then again, the C8 is way cheaper than many other supercars so options like these are popular. Customers who ordered the option are being informed that it will no longer be available on their C8 due to a supplier issue. Ouch.
Based on a report from the guys at Corvette Blogger, the supplier was unable to meet the demand for the carbon fiber aero kit and the option has since been removed from the automaker's online configurator. There is still a chance, though, that orders placed early enough won't have the option removed. For those who missed out, all is not lost as the kits are installed at dealers so it can be installed at a later date once the supply is back up to healthy levels.
A quick browse of Chevrolet's current configurator indeed confirms that the kit has been removed, although there are a few exterior carbon fiber accessories still available at lower prices (pictured above). These include a carbon-fiber dual roof package for $3,495, a visible carbon-fiber grille insert for $2,095, and outside mirror covers in carbon fiber for $1,145.
When the kit does eventually become available at dealers, they'll carry a three-year/36,000-mile warranty, but it won't be a surprise if an aftermarket alternative becomes available even sooner, especially considering the high demand. Still, it's an unfortunate setback for the new C8's launch given that the supercar has so much else going for it. Not only is it comparatively reasonably priced at below $60,000, but it now has a well-crafted and thoroughly modern cabin to go along with the 490-hp V8 that slingshots the Corvette to 60 mph in under three seconds. Carbon-fiber add-ons or not, it's a mighty impressive drive.
