Report: Spurs target Willian Jose told teammates he was leaving before talks broke down

Willian Jose had told his teammates he was expecting to leave the club in anticipation of a fresh offer from Tottenham Hotspur before talks broke down earlier in the window, according to a report from the London Evening Standard.

Jose Mourinho may be disappointed if he is not able to land a new striker in the final hours of the window.

And it appears that the Real Sociedad man was one target that Mourinho wanted to come in and help fill the void created by Harry Kane’s injury.

It has been suggested by the London Evening Standard that Spurs made a bid of around £12.6 million earlier in the month. However, the report notes that the Basque club wanted double that amount for the 28-year-old.

Nevertheless, it appears that Willian Jose seemingly expected Spurs to come back in and make sure that they got a move across the line.

The London Evening Standard reports that the Brazilian had told teammates that he was expecting Tottenham to make an improved bid that would see him leave the La Liga side.

The report notes that Spurs ultimately never got closer to meeting Sociedad’s £25.2 million asking price.

Willian Jose has an impressive record from his time at Sociedad. He has scored 46 goals in 113 league games.

And with eight league goals under his belt this season, he is well on his way to continuing his run of reaching double figures in every campaign since his move to La Real.

Spurs fans may therefore, be wary of ruing not signing the forward this month. He was obviously prepared to move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

And given his asking price, you could understand why some supporters may have felt that he may have been a shrewd signing this month.
