Report: Sunderland trying to sign Swansea defender Declan John on loan
by Dom TonerSunderland are reportedly trying to wrap up a move for Swansea City defender Declan John.
According to Sky Sports on its live transfer blog (4:16pm, 31 January), the Black Cats are still “working hard” to secure a deal for the left-back.
It is understood that Phil Parkinson’s side are trying to bring the 24-year-old to the Stadium of Light on loan for the rest of the season.
John has managed just five senior appearances this season for Championship side Swansea and can’t quite seem to find a way into a team that are in the play-off picture.
Meanwhile, Sunderland are fifth in League One and are trying to tempt the Swansea full-back to drop down a division loan.
He’s an attack-minded left-back that has earned seven senior international caps for Wales, while previously enjoying club spells at Cardiff City and Rangers too.
TBR’s View:
Sunderland could do with a left-back through the door before the January transfer window shuts on Friday and it looks like Swansea’s defender could be the one for them.
Academy graduate Denver Hume is the only real recognised option at left-back in the Sunderland squad, so they are just an injury away from being in trouble.
John would arrive in League One with a fairly impressive CV if he does join on loan and could be an improvement.
He’s got the pace and quality to slot in a wing-back role, which is why fans should be thrilled if a deal can be wrapped up.
