A Brexit supporter has purchased a personal number plate marking the UK's exit from the EU for £400 - and hopes to auction it off for more than 10 times that amount.

Shaun Craigie snapped up the registration - UK20 OUT - from the DVLA.

The 41-year-old from east Bristol said he got the idea after reading about demand for the registration EU20 OUT, and was surprised to find his priced at the £400 mark.

He now hopes to make more than £4,000 from the plate from auction.

Mr Craigie, who was owner of Bristol-based bus company Greyhound, which ceased operating in 2015, said: "The number plate is historic - it is the only plate to mark this time in history.

"It speaks for itself really."

He added: "It was something in the newspapers about other number plates which got me thinking. I thought what about 'UK20 OUT' and it was there for £400.

"I think I can get more than £4,000 for it at auction."

Mr Craigie has set up an email address to take offers for the numberplate. It is uk20out@outlook.com.

The registration cannot be used until March 1.

Mr Craigie is not the only person selling number plates to mark Brexit.

Company National Numbers had plates such as EU20BYE and EU20 OUT up for sale.

In a statement, the firm said: “If you aren’t buying a new vehicle in 2020, these plates also make a great collector’s item to hold on a certificate which you can do immediately."

The DVLA release new number plates every March and September as proof of when a vehicle was first registered.

From March to September new cars will be registered with “20” as their number plate code and this will jump to “70” in registrations from September 2019.
