This Will Be The Quickest Volkswagen Golf R Ever

That's right, this Golf packs the ID.R drivetrain!

Volkswagen fans are eagerly awaiting the reveal of the eighth-generation Golf R, which should be arriving later in 2020. The car was recently spotted on the road with no camouflaging, giving us a good indication of what the hottest Golf model should look like. Like the outgoing Golf R, this new model is expected to use a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, which should now produce around 328 horsepower. But will this new Golf R actually be the hottest Golf available?

At a GP Ice Race event in Austria this weekend, VW will reveal a new e-Performance Golf R concept, which the company says is "an ambassador for future performance cars for Volkswagen R." So, what makes the e-Performance Golf R so special? Well, it packs the electric drivetrain from the record setting ID.R.

If we need to remind you, the ID.R is the fastest electric car to ever lap the Nurburgring, the quickest car ever at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, and the outright record holder at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This world record breaking race car is powered by two electric motors (one at each axel) combining to produce 670 hp. Now, this impressive drivetrain has found its way into a humble Golf hatchback. Specifically, it looks like VW has used the shell of a Golf TCR touring car. This Golf will undoubtedly be slower than the ID.R due to its shape but with those electric motors under it, we expect this to be the fastest Golf ever produced.

VW has hinted that its future ID. models could eventually receive the R treatment via the addition of a second electric motor at the front axle. For now, this project is purely motorsports-related but could make its way to a road car in the near future. We look forward to seeing the e-Performance Golf R concept in action this weekend.
