A Richmond B.C. man has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison for his role in a human smuggling case.

63-year-old Michael Kong received the sentence for bringing 34 migrants across the Peace Arch border crossing illegally between June 2014 and October 2015.

CTV News Vancouver is reporting that Kong, of Richmond B.C., received a $175,000 fine and will be out in just 17 months after already serving 25 months in jail.

During the trial, the prosecution proved that dozens of migrants crossed the bridge, built as a symbol of friendship between the U.S. and Canada, after receiving U.S. visas issued in China by the U.S. Consulate there.
