Panic seems to have gripped Zimbabwe after their western neighbours confirmed that the coronavirus may have reached Botswana. The government of Botswana on Thursday,  announced that it has isolated the first suspected case of the deadly coronavirus. Botswana’s Ministry of Health and Wellness Director, Malaki Tshipayagae, revealed that Botswana registered its first ever-suspected case of Coronavirus infection on the 30 January 2020.

The case cames only a few days after China introduced strict quarantine measures on major cities to prevent the spread of the virus. The person who is suspected of being infected with the coronavirus was intercepted and isolated by health officials at the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport upon the arrival of Ethiopian Airways flight from China. The person has since been quarantined at Block 8 Clinic in Botswana’s capital, Gaborone and is being tested on an on-going basis.

Below is the official statement from the republic of Botswana.

The Wuhan coronavirus, also known as 2019-nCoV – first discovered in Wuhan, central China, on December 31, 2019, has spread so far that it is close to becoming a global pandemic.

As of January 30, the death toll in China stands at 170, with 7,711 confirmed cases of infections. In the past week, the number of confirmed infections has more than tripled and cases have been found in 13 provinces, as well as the municipalities of Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing and Tianjin.  The situation is so serious that Chinese authorities have constructed a new 1,000-bed coronavirus hospital close to Wuhan in just 48 hours.

The Dabie Mountain Regional Medical Centre started receiving patients at 10.30 pm last night after workers spent just 48 hours converting an empty building. More than 500 construction workers, electricians and police worked around the clock to open the hospital in the Huangzhou District.

The virus has also been confirmed outside China, in Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, Nepal, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the US, and Vietnam.
